GLOBAL VOICES - DOCUMENTARY FEATURE (90MINS)
Four young women use their personal internet diaries and everyday actions to fight against political oppression in their countries. Their blogs express anger as well as despair at the brutality of their authoritarian regimes. Governments respond with threats and acts of repression in order to intimidate and silence these courageous woman bloggers. "GLOBAL VOICES" follows its protagonists on their conflict-ridden journeys and tries to establish whether the struggle of these committed four young women will bring about lasting political changes in their respective countries.
Before originally starting their blogs, they were ordinary young women. Their brave statements and dedication, however, has made them a danger to their countries' rulers. "GLOBAL VOICES" focuses on four young female bloggers from 4 different cultures and countries, whose regimes violate human rights and view the freedom of opinion and the press as obstacles to their power.
The four characters may all come from different countries, but their goals and concerns are the same. In their blogs, they demand political and social justice but also express their vulnerability and doubts from a very personal viewpoint. In their web diaries as well as everyday lives, they fight for human rights, freedom of the press and fundamental democratic rights, risking harsh punishment or even death. But no matter how many repressive acts or setbacks they suffer, nothing will deter these bloggers in their ultimate struggle.
"GLOBAL VOICES" intends to take cinema audiences on a compelling journey, which shows the highs and lows of the protagonists' daily struggle. The film follows them in their difficult everyday lives and undertakes a journey with them which will prove essential to their quest. Unlike Cyberspace, where words can travel at the speed of light, these women's actions will prove arduous and full of obstacles as there is little room for individual action in a dictatorship.
By focusing on a generation of interconnected (tech savy), rebellious women, this feature-length documentary places its finger on the 21st century pulse. It aims to encourage a fundamental debate on our responsabilities as individuals as well as a radical exploration of basic liberties such as freedom of opinion and the respect of human rights.
